      @chicksinrubber 7 месяцев назад

      I personally use Louet Mini double rows for things like Shetland, There are many more brands on the market now and if your fleece is particularly long or tight you might be better with some a bit more robust. Maybe Majacraft, though all are expensive now.

      Thank you. I did a textile qualification years ago because I wasn't happy always with my end results. That taught me the value of sampling right through a project. Many people think of it as a waste of time and fibre but actually saves on both in the end.

    I’ve been trying to spin a balanced 2ply yarn to knit with. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t and I can’t figure out why. I watched your video and tried to recreate what you did with the 2 colours but I don’t get what you mean by the twist going in a straight line. Mine is like that but one of my knitted samples is perfectly straight and the other is badly slanted.

    • @helenmullineux2197
      @helenmullineux2197 Год назад

      Thank you for replying so long after the video was originally posted. I tried as best I could to replicate the blue and white yarn in the video and I can see what you mean. However, with only one colour of yarn it’s a lot more difficult! It seems to me that to be balanced a 2ply yarn must have very little twist.

    • @chicksinrubber
      @chicksinrubber Год назад

      @@helenmullineux2197 no balance is relative to how much twist is in the singles. A 2 ply you are in effect taking half of the twist out of each single to balance, therefore there is half left in. So if each single has 40 twists to the inch there will be 20 twists to the inch remaining in each single when plyed. It is not the twist you need to be straight but the fibre. It is a weird concept but accurate. The reason I spin two colours together as one single yarn is so that when freshly spun and allowed to ply back on itself it will naturally balance making it easier to see that the fibre is straight. Try combing or carding two very different colours together lightly and spin that then ply back and look at one colour only.

    Good instruction. Better with 3 different colors on 3 ply. What do you do if you have too much twist in your yarn?

    • @chicksinrubber
      @chicksinrubber Год назад

      generally I don' because I test spin first and keep samples to match it to. If it is in your plying run it back through the opposite way. if it is in the singles and you have already plyed it not much you can do without a lot of hassle.

    Empty toilet paper rolls make great storage bobbins for a pretty good amount of yarn. i wind on them like a nostepinne. I tear a small slit on one end to pull through the end to keep it from unwinding. Best part, they are free! Small enough to carry with you to take off spindle spun yarn.

    Thank you for your videos I have just found them. Do you still spin and dye wool? I see you adding wool to the hot dye pot, I thought it had to be added to cold water and bought up to hot. Also do you do any plant dyes now?

    • @chicksinrubber
      @chicksinrubber 2 года назад

      Thank you. I do still spin and dye. It is fine to put fibre into hot dye, my first layers or if doing just one colour I would put in cold and bring slowly up to a simmer. But this method is fine. I don't do natural dyes mainly because I want colourfastness and also I use finer fibres which don't react well to prolonged high heat. I like the repeatability I get with chemical dyes.
